Non-Law Elective Courses

Each semester, a limited number of non-law courses at other schools within Vanderbilt University are approved as electives eligible for credit toward the J.D. degree.

If you are not participating in an approved joint-degree program, you may receive credit for up to six credit hours of graduate-level study in non-law courses taken from other schools within Vanderbilt University.

If you are participating in a joint degree programs, you are not eligible for additional non-law elective credits beyond those permitted by your program.

If you wish to take a non-law elective course other than those on the law school’s approved list and earn credit toward your J.D. degree, you must submit a written petition to the Associate Dean for approval. A proposed course will be approved only if you demonstrate a reasonable relationship between the course and the study of law. If you wish to consider enrolling in a non-law course, consult the law school Registrar about the approval process.
