E. Clifton Knowles practiced law for 20 years as a partner with the Nashville-based firm of Bass Berry & Sims before his appointment to the bench. After graduating from law school, Judge Knowles served as a law clerk for the Honorable George Edwards, United States Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit.

At Vanderbilt Law School, Professor Knowles teaches Trial Advocacy.
