Computer Recommendations for VULS Students

Although VULS does not have a mandatory computer requirement, owning a laptop is strongly recommended.

The law school building has been extensively wired with network ports in many locations throughout the building to accommodate laptop users.

Wireless networking and internet service is available throughout the school, including outdoor areas immediately adjacent to the building. The VULS wireless network is Wi-Fi certified and complies with 802.11a/g standard.

Purchase Recommendations

If you are in a position to purchase a laptop, we recommend either Dell or Apple systems. The Law School IT team provides support for Dell and Apple laptops which are covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Support is provided for hardware issues as well as software issues relating to the operating system or software/applications related to academic purposes. For example, we provide support for accessing your Vanderbilt email and the OAK course management system, but support for iTunes is not provided.

Regardless of brand, we strongly recommend purchasing the 3-year warranty for your new laptop. For Dell systems the recommended warranty is Three Year CompleteCare which covers accidental damage that affects system operation. For Apple systems we recommend Three Year AppleCare coverage. Apple does not provide accidental damage protection at this time.
