The Isocratic Society

2008/2009 Officers

President: Byron Sarhangian

Faculty Advisor: Professor Lisa Bressman

Formed in 2006, The name of the Society shall be the Isocratic Society of Vanderbilt University Law School (Societas Isocratica). It shall be the object of the Society to promote cultural experience and academic discourse for the benefit of its members and the University.

The Isocratic Society is, in fact, named after Isocrates, one of the great Attic Orators. His scholarship is not to be confused with the likes of Gorgias, a one-dimensional orator who lacked the ability to think on his feet. Isocrates' background, contrary to that of the majority of Sophists of the time, was in courtroom rhetoric. Isocrates was also a strong proponent of civic education. Thus, the society has taken his name - a pioneer of education, legal rhetoric, and culture.

The Society’s emblem shall be a shield flanked by two banners, and represent all facets of the society: scales of justice representing law; scroll representing academics; phi representing scholarship; the seal of Vanderbilt University Law School; the seal of the City of Nashville; and the face of the Michelin Man representing socialization.

The Society’s emblem must read the Society's Latin name as well as its motto, “Arbiter Elegantiarum.”
